Dungeon Master Java is a remake of the classic game Dungeon Master by FTL/Software Heaven. It is implemented entirely in Java, and is therefore able to run on any platform supporting Java version 1.4 or higher with an installed runtime environment (JRE or SDK). It is a stand-alone application, not a web-browser applet. The game features many original graphics that simulate a 3D environment. These were for the most part rendered in the free ray-tracer POV-Ray. Item graphics and character portraits are done by hand with a paint program, though many are enhanced versions of those taken from the original game and its sequels.
Gameplay is very similar to the original, with real-time action, 90-degree turns, and step-by-step movement. One major change from the original is that monsters are not "stuck" in groups: they are completely free to wander, sometimes occupying a square with other monsters and sometimes not.
Return to Chaos is a Windows version of the FTL classic "Dungeon Master" and its sequel "Chaos Strikes Back", originally released on the Atari ST and Amiga in 1987.

Exile is a series of role-playing video games created by Jeff Vogel of Spiderweb Software. They were released as shareware titles for Macintosh and Windows systems. Exile III was also ported to Linux by a third party. There were four games released in the series. The first three games were later revived in the Avernum series.
Exile I: Escape from the Pit (1995)
The first game of the Exile trilogy sees a party of newly created characters thrown from the world above into the subterranean world known as Exile. Once here, the party discovers a civilization formed from the outcasts of the Empire above, a culture beset by constant warfare and monsters galore. The party meets with many of those who wish to get revenge on the Empire for the wrongs it has done to the peoples of Exile.
The characters become a rallying point around which the people of Exile who desire vengeance gather to focus their energies into finding a way to strike back against the cruel Emperor of the surface. Together, the party manages to assassinate Emperor Hawthorne in his throne room, banish the demon king Grah-hoth who was becoming a significant threat to the citizens of Exile, and secure an escape route to the surface.
Exile II: Crystal Souls (1996)
The second Exile game follows directly from the first. The Empire has begun to recognise the threat the Exiles pose and begin sending their army down into Exile in huge numbers. To make matters worse, unknown barriers of energy are sprouting up around the world – sometimes aiding the Exiles, sometimes helping the Empire who can afford the losses much more easily than the Exiles.
A new party of characters meets one of the creatures causing the barriers sprouting up in Exile and go to meet with the unknown race to negotiate. In the end, the party is more successful - and the Vahnatai join with the Exiles to drive out the Empire. With the support of the Vahnatai the Exiles turn the tables on the Empire and successfully repulse their invasion.
Exile III: Ruined World (1997)
The final release in the Exile trilogy takes place some time after Exile II. A lot of preparation has taken place and now the Exiles are ready to send a selected few back into the light of the surface. However, while the members of the expedition are at first stunned by the sheer beauty of the land around them, they begin to notice that things are not as perfect as they seem. The slimes the party encounters are only the first part of what becomes a series of monsters and terrible occurrences that are blighting the Empire and laying it to waste.
While scouting the land, as were the expedition members' orders from the nation of Exile, the members are asked by the Empire to help save the surface from its blight. They bring the Exiles and the Empire together once more as allies trying to find the cause of the destruction.
Blades of Exile (1997)
Blades of Exile consists of three short scenarios set after the main trilogy as well as an editor that allows players to create their own scenarios, which need not be set in the Exile game world at all. Several hundred custom-made scenarios have been designed since the release of the game in 1997. The most prominent meeting places on the web of the Blades of Exile community are the official company-hosted internet forum. These forums offer support for beginning designers and players, reviews of new scenarios and general discussions about the use of the scenario editor. In June 2007, Jeff Vogel released the source code and game content for Blades of Exile, which is currently under version 2 of the GNU General Public License.
PLEASE NOTE: Exile trilogy games are 16-bit programs and DO NOT run in 64-bit Windows operating systems and Mac versions require MacOS 10.4 or older.
Blades of Exile source code was released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License
Exile Trilogy was released as freeware in 2013 to celebrate Spiderweb Software's 20th anniversary.
Exit Fate is a new full-length RPG from SCF, creator of the well-received RPGMaker effort Last Scenario. The game not only features standard 2D battle encounters but boasts a tactical strategy mode as well, in which players must assume control over legions of troops, issue commands and lead their armies to a crushing victory. Bonus items are awarded for good results, especially if the fight ends quickly with minimal losses to your side.
A new addition is the bribe system, allowing players to avoid potentially dangerous encounters by using the local currency as a bargaining device. Use the C key to confirm your selections, or press the X key to cancel your choices.
The magic system is also a slight departure from most common RPGs. You earn mana points as the battle progresses, meaning that most spells can only be cast after several turns. The number of times a spell can be used in each battle is limited, but unused healing spells are cast automatically to restore the health of party members after battle.
Press the Left Alt and Enter key to switch between full screen and windowed mode. This game comes highly recommended if you're a big fan of RPGs, and wouldn't mind a couple of ripped sound effects, music and familiar-looking tilesets. (Source: Indie Games Weblog)
Flare (Free Libre Action Roleplaying Engine) is a simple game engine built to handle a very specific kind of game: single-player 2D action RPGs. Flare is not a reimplementation of an existing game or engine. It is a tribute to and exploration of the action RPG genre.

FreedroidRPG features a real time combat system with melee and ranged weapons, fairly similar to the proprietary game Diablo. There is an innovative system of programs that can be run in order to take control of enemy robots, alter their behavior, or improve one's characteristics. You can use over 50 different kinds of items and fight countless enemies on your way to your destiny. An advanced dialog system provides story background and immersive role playing situations.
The game is complete, fully playable, and can provide about 10 hours of fun. It is still being actively developed, and help is welcome in many areas. People having - or trying to acquire - programming, map editing, or writing skills will find FreedroidRPG to be an exciting, fast-moving project in which they can fully express their creativity.

It features a dynamic world that is never quite the same, armies that fight each other and burn down cities in a branching storyline with multiple endings. Last Scenario is a game made using the popular RPGMaker XP that could possibly rival Aveyond's level of professionalism, perhaps even surpass it. Tiles, music and sound effects are standard material that is included with the package, but most of the character portraits, sprites and backgrounds seen in this release were created by the developer.
The C key is used for most interactions and menu selections. Press the X key to access the inventory screen or to cancel any choices. A medium length RPG with over a thousand rooms, side quests, a unique spellcard system and even a collectible board game, it's quite unlikely that any fan would complete this production in a couple of sittings. Laxius Power - Random Story is a gigantic console type RPG. Even without including the various sidequests and secrets, Laxius Power has more than 50 hours of game play. The large number of areas which can be explored immediately, explored later, or ignored altogether make the game play seem somewhat nonlinear, a feat rarely accomplished in an RPG. The game includes several characters, multiple difficulty levels, and several sidequests.
A great sequel to one of the best freeware console-style RPGs, Laxius Power II is even larger and more polished than Laxius Power, the prequel which was already an epic-sized RPG. Everything that was great about the first game has been improved and magnified in this one: a bigger game world, more subquests, better graphics, and more interesting NPCs than the original. You can now control all 4 heroes of the saga, each of whom follows his or her own agenda throughout the game.
Laxius PowerIII - The Final Terror is the massive and spectacular conclusion to the epic trilogy of RPG Games. More open-ended than ever, featuring a whooping 200 hours of gameplay in this chapter, the Laxius Power saga brings you to one of the biggest worlds ever created in a free RPG. In this new installment, better than the 2 former ones to all regards, Random and his friends are engaged against ugly, gruesome creatures in atmospheric, creepy settings.
If you enjoy classic RPG like Final Fantasy 3/6 or Breath of Fire, you should definitely give a try to this game. On the other hand, if you're fond of open ended RPG with a strong linear feel like Morrowind, Daggerfall, Baldur's Gate or Might & Magic, do not miss Laxius Power 3 too! With amazing and stylished anime style characters, and huge exploration sequences in a vast world, this game should be a great experience.
Lost Labyrinth is a so-called "roguelike" roleplaying computer game with a "Zelda"-like graphics engine and very high replayability.
Nazghul is a computer role-playing game (CRPG) engine. Here's what it looks like when played. Obviously, the emphasis is not on graphics or first-person squad-based stealth action. If you like roguelikes or the top-down, 2d, turn-based CRPG's that disappeared in the early 90's then this is for you.
Haxima is the first full-featured game built with the nazghul engine.
NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.
Privateer: Ascii Sector is a 100% free space combat/exploration/trading game for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. You start with a simple spaceship and can then accept missions or trade goods to earn enough money to upgrade your ship or buy a new one. You can engage in deadly fights both in space and on the ground, and using the Privateer: Ascii Sector quest language, you can create your own stories in the Ascii Sector universe, or have fun with other players' stories.
What sets this game apart from most others is its 'graphics'. Privateer: Ascii Sector uses only ASCII characters in 16 different colors to present its environments. This might take some getting used to for most players, but it also means that the game's single designer and programmer can concentrate on gameplay instead of fancy graphics

1848 is a turn based computer strategy game by Hussar Games. The game is set during the violent era of the Hungarian Independence War of 1848-49. 1848 was a year of revolutions. Most of the uprisings were crushed quickly, but Hungary was an exception. The newly created Honved Army suffered some set-backs in 1848, but in the 1849 spring counter-attack, the whole country was liberated. Victory was sweet but short for Hungary - in the summer of 1849 the Tsar of Russia intervened with 200,000 troops. In history, this force could not be stopped. Can you change history?

You can also challenge up to eight friends—or strangers—and fight in epic multiplayer fantasy battles.
Battleships Forever is a freeware tactical Real Time Strategy game that put's you in command of a small fleet of warships in space. Combat and damage mechanics are extremely detailed. Everything is simulated in game if possible. There are no abitrary "to hit chance" values in Battleships Forever. The game also features many innovative mechanics that you've never seen before. For example, the Cronus Battleship sports a Flux Shield generator that allows you to draw a defensive force shield around your ships in any shape you want. Another example are the Deflector modules that are used extensively through the game. These modules make a single section of a ship totally invulnerable to fire. This means that you will have to manoeuvre your ships to attack sections of the enemy ships not protected by Deflectors while keeping your own protected sections facing the enemy. Position is paramount!
Players will command picked fleets made up of Battleships, Destroyers and Patrol Craft. The completed game will include ten campaign missions and multiple skirmish modes.
Battleships Forever is inspired by and loosely based on Warning Forever by Hikoza.T.Ohkubo
Bos Wars is a futuristic real time strategy game (RTS). In a RTS game, the player has to combat his enemies while developing his war economy. Everything runs in real-time, as opposed to turn-based games where the player always has to wait for his turn. The trick is to balance the effort put into building his economy and building an army to defend and attack the enemies.
Bos Wars has a dynamic rate based economy. Energy is produced by power plants and magma gets pumped from hot spots. Buildings and mobile units are also built at a continuous rate. Control of larger parts of the map creates the potential to increase your economy throughput. Holding key points like roads and passages allow for different strategies.
It is possible to play against human opponents over LAN, internet, or against the computer. Bos Wars successfully runs under Linux, MS Windows, BSD, and Mac OS X.
Bos Wars aims to create a completely original and fun open source RTS game.

C-evo is a non-commercial empire building game, dealing with the history of man from the antiquity until the future. This includes aspects of exploration and expansion, war and diplomacy, cultivation and pollution, industry and agriculture, research and administration.
The game is based on Microprose's famous Sid Meier's Civilization and has many basic ideas in common with it. Actually, this project has arised from the wish to correct annoying design mistakes and AI weaknesses of Civ II. C-evo is aiming to be an ageless, unornate, truely challenging strategy game. So, in contrast to similar other games, it does not focus on being "big", "up to date", superficially exciting or historically correct.

KeeperRL is a Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress inspired dungeon simulator built on top of roguelike mechanics. What makes the game different from other RTS is that you can, and are encouraged to, control your main character and lead your minions to an open war. Noctis (Latin for "of the night") is an open source computer space flight simulator remarkable for the program's small size (under 1 MiB) as well as the vast size of the imaginary galaxy modelled by it.
More specifically, Noctis is a space simulation in which the player takes on the role of an explorer in a spacecraft called a Stardrifter. No goal or measure of success is imposed by the game: it simply allows the player to explore a fictional galaxy (of a realistic size) and catalogue their findings in a shared database of names known as the GUIDE (for stars, planets and moons). Since the player in the game is manifested as a physical being, the exploration involves travelling between stars, refuelling the Stardrifter from Lithium ion-ejecting stars, approaching planets in star systems and their moons, and even exploring the surfaces of worlds whose environments allow landing. Many planets feature atmospheres and weather effects. Some contain plants and animals, or even mysterious ruins. Stars, planets and moons can all be named and annotated (in a GUIDE, see below) for future reference, through an in-game computer interface inside the Stardrifter.
In the game's sci-fi setting, a fleet of Stardrifters was left behind by a race of sentient cats known as Felysians who abandoned their home world (planet Felysia, star system Balastrackonastreya) long ago for unknown reasons. The Felysians were the only sentient beings in the Noctis galaxy, so there are none to find in the Noctis game.
Oolite is a space sim game, inspired by Elite, powered by Objective-C and OpenGL, and designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up, modify and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be changed by using simple, free graphics packages and text editors.
OpenDungeons is an open source, real time strategy game sharing game elements with the Dungeon Keeper series and Evil Genius. Orbiter is a real-time 3D space flight simulator for the Windows PC. The concept is similar to traditional flight simulator software, but you are not limited to atmospheric flight. Orbiter allows you to experience manned and unmanned space flight missions from the pilot's perspective. Take control from launch to orbtial insertion, rendezvous with space stations, deploy and recapture satellites, and re-enter and land on a planetary surface. The playground is our solar system, and you can even execute missions to the moon or other planets. (Time compression is available to shorten long cruise phases.) Orbiter accurately models the physics of spaceflight, which makes it possible to either recreate historic missions, or use it as a sandbox for futuristic spacecraft concepts.
Pioneer is a space adventure game set in the milkyway galaxy at the turn of the 31st century.
The game is open-ended, and you are free to explore the millions of star systems in the game. You can land on planets, slingshot past gas giants, and burn yourself to a crisp flying between binary star systems.
When Pioneer is finished there will be many ways to make ends meet: piracy, smuggling, bounty-hunting, mining, doing missions for the various factions fighting for power, freedom or self-determination.
Pioneer has a sneaking resemblance to Frontier: Elite 2.

Seven Kingdoms, designed by Trevor Chan, brings a mix of RTS like Warcraft 2 and turn-based strategy of Civilization. The real-time strategy with trade, diplomacy, and espionage sets it apart from the rest.
In 2009, Enlight Software released the game under the GPL license. 7kfans project is updating the game and provides a community for fans. A free Seven Kingdoms will help continue the legacy.
Seven Kingdoms now supports SDL instead of DirectX, and supports Linux natively.
Note that game does not include intro video nor ingame music as these were made by third parties. You can use the video and music from your retail disk or GOG.com installation.
Simutrans is a freeware and open-source transportation simulation game that runs under Windows, Linux, BeOS on PC, and OS X on Intel based Macs.
In Simutrans you can build the transport networks you always dreamed of, with platforms, quays, level crossings, bridges, tunnels, signals and much more. Transport passengers between nearby cities with a commuter train or use a high speed train to earn big money by connecting cities further apart.
You can choose from a large amount of trains including steam, diesel and electric engines, along with multiple units - each with a different properties. Fleet of ships and ferries, buses, trams, trolley buses, trucks, and planes are at your daily disposal. More exotic ways of transport include monorails and maglevs.
Make your own bus system, transporting people throughout the city and lay out new bus routes to make cities grow. Watch your cities really come alive with trucks driving around carrying all kinds of goods. Supply the bookstore with new books and watch out, the Car Seller has almost run out of new cars! Be sure that the furniture factory has enough wood. Oops, the materials wholesaler has just sold his last planks, be quick to buy a new truck to strengthen out that route!
Connect all kinds of industries with each other, the Power Plant needs coal to run. The Refinery gets its supplies from either an Oil Field or an Oil Rig, and produces plastics which allow new cars required by the Car Seller to be built, and gasoline that is sold in gas stations to make those cars run. More of these industry chains are built in this incredible simulation.
Simutrans-Experimental has been developed to provide additional features not found in Simutrans-Standard, and also to modify some existing features to change the overall balance of the game. The emphasis is on economic and operational realism, improving the gameplay balance, increasing variety, and making the game more challenging in the later stages (where, in Simutrans-Standard, it can be very easy), and less challenging in the earlier stage (where, in Simutrans-Standard, it can be very hard): in other words, to have a longer, smoother learning curve.

Steel Panthers: World at War is a tactical level, World War II era, historical wargame by Matrix Games. This is a very highly refined version of Steel Panthers III, placed in the Steel Panthers I game scale. We used Steel Panthers III since it was the most stable version of the game engine yet created. The original game series was designed by Gary Grigsby, Keith Brors and Joel Billings. SP:WaW is a hex based, top down view, alternating turn ("I go, you go" or IGOUGO) game design. SP:WaW also includes a timed play feature, giving each player a specific amount of time to conduct his turn before it ends and his opponent's turn begins. Armor, gun and vehicle units are represented by individual icons. Each infantry squad can have up to 25 men in it. Machine guns, mortars and artillery units are also realisticaly portrayed and crewed. Each hex represents 50 yards (meters) of the virtual battlefield, with many new terrain features added. Each game turn represents a few minutes of real time, and games can last from a few turns to entire campaigns.
WinSPWW2 and WinSPMBT are tactical level wargames based on the code for the game Steel Panthers 2 released by SSI in 1996. WinSPWW2 covers the years 1930-1946 and WinSPMBT covers 1946-2020. Both games utilise hexagon-based maps and are alternating turn based (I go you go or IGOUGO) design.) One unit playing piece represents one vehicle or gun, or an infantry squad (section of up to 19 men in winSPWW2 and 13 men in WinSPMBT) or a section of 1 to 4 support weapons. One game hexagon represents 50 yards/metres of terrain. One game move (player 1 turn plus player 2 turn) represents roughly 3 minutes of 'real time'.
The War Engine is the ultimate table top war game simulation and replication kit. Limited only by your imagination, all units, weapons and terrain are fully configurable in artwork and stats. Ready made worlds range from sci-fi to fantasy to space to World War 2.

Soviet Unterzögersdorf (pronounced "oon-taa-tsee-gars-doorf") is the last existing appanage republic of the USSR. The enclave maintains no diplomatic relationship with the surrounding so-called "Republic of Austria" or with the Fortress "European Union". The downfall of her motherland -- the Soviet Union -- in the early 1990s had a particularly bad effect on the country's economic situation.
It is a great challenge to secure survival for the small but proud confederation. External reactionary forces put the country in danger. It's a lack of respect due to a morally corrupted and perhaps even non-existing unity of the peoples. The goal of a glorious future is almost unreachable.
But there are a handful of people who don't give up on a vision for a better tomorrow. Let us tell you the stories of the brave citizens in the beautiful little country of Soviet Unterzögersdorf.

Cube is the original game that started it all. Though it has been surpassed in almost every way by Cube 2, it is a game in its own right. Most importantly, it comes with over 100 (!) maps, most of which are not available in Cube 2, with extensive single and multi player content.
Cube is also smaller in every way, in download, in hardware requirements (runs well on older video cards!), and in source code (the absolutely tiny code base is a very easy start for those wishing to experiment).
It also has some unique engine features such as the high precision dynamic occlusion culling, and its heighfield based level format.
Free single and multi player 1st person shooter game with some satisfying fast oldskool gameplay. A large variety of gameplay modes from classic SP to fast 1 on 1 MP and objective based teamplay, with a great variety of original maps to play on.
Level editing has never been so much fun: a press of a key allows you to modify the geometry / textures / entities in-game, on the fly. Even more novel, you can make maps together with others online, in the unique "coop edit" mode (!)
The engine, though designed for simplicity and elegance as opposed to feature & eyecandy checklists, still competes nicely thanks to its novel "6-directional heighfield deformable cube octree" world structure that is the basis for its in-game editing. Occlusion culling, pixel & vertex shaders, very accurate lightmapping, robust custom physics system, network system, models, sound, scripting...
GeneRally is a freeware arcade racing game that is played from a top-down perspective. The game was originally launched in May 2002 by Hannu and Jukka Räbinä.
Knights is a multiplayer game involving several knights who must run around a dungeon and complete various quests.
Each game revolves around a quest – for example, you might have to find some items and carry them back to your starting point. This may sound easy, but as there are only enough items in the dungeon for one player to win, you may end up having to kill your opponents to get their stuff! Other quests involve escaping from the dungeon, fighting a duel to the death against the enemy knight(s), or destroying an ancient Book using a special Wand. While exploring the dungeon, you will find aid in the form of weapons, potions and magical spells, but beware for there are also deadly traps, bloodthirsty vampire bats and zombies who exist only to kill living knights!
Although the game can be slightly complex to learn at first (due to the large number of weapons and items available), it is great fun and the customizable quests and random dungeons make it highly replayable. It can be played online, over a LAN, or in split screen mode (pictured above).
Knights was originally a freeware game for the Amiga, written by Kalle Marjola in 1994. This version uses all of the original graphics and sounds (kindly made available by the original author on this page), but the game code has been rewritten from scratch in C++. The main changes compared to the original are faster, smoother gameplay, and the addition of online game modes.
